I’ve written a novel for veggies and vegans in the hope that if enough of you buy this book it’ll attract the attention and curiosity of the mainstream public. I came to the conclusion a few years ago that people who care about animals often spend too much time preaching to the already converted, so I set about writing something that yes, also preaches to the converted, but in an entertaining way which has the potential to influence others.

“The Empathy Spectrum” is a subversive dystopian work that attacks factory farming, large corporations and genetic engineering by using environmental themes together with philosophical and psychological ones. The story also suggests that we are heading for an authoritarian world in which the best way to control people is by getting them to believe they are free and eroding their empathy. The novel has many layers but if I had to sum it up in one word I’d say “abuse”; not just the abuse of non-human animals by the cruelty humans inflict on them, but also the abuse of people and the planet we live on.

Synopsis:  In a hedonistic authoritarian society, two people meet in prison and fall in love. Tegan Meredith, a vegan activist and Caitlin McKenna, a strict vegetarian, are being held for fighting back against the abuse they’ve both experienced.

This novel is ground breaking! It takes a view that most people are terrified to admit is needed, and are secretly ashamed that they are not taking it also... Wow, just wow, the more people who read this, the better! It is terrifyingly close to home, but I simply couldn't put it down. It is well written, including the risqué and more shocking parts, and reads as not only believable but perfectly true to life.It is disturbing in that it is an entirely plausible portrayal of one devastating path that the world could very well take; and for this reason it HAS to be read by all to ensure we do fall even further down that path!Almost too shocking to read but also too shocking to ignore! I am recommending this to everyone I know. Many congratulations Kit, I look forward hugely to any more work you may produce x

It's been a long time since I read a novel with such strong themes concerning animal rights. In fact, the last one was called: "The Lives of Animals" by J.M.Coetzee, a truly wonderful book. In my opinion, "The Empathy Spectrum" is an equally wonderful novel in that it also makes us think about the lives of our fellow creatures, together with the human condition. I would strongly recommend this publication to anyone thinking of becoming a vegetarian or a vegan, as well as those who enjoy a thought provoking read.

About Kit

The Empathy Spectrum” is my first novel and I began writing it in 2011 when a very early retirement from a career as a therapist left me with enough time to pursue doing what I always wanted to do. When I started to think about the sort of novel I’d like to write I remembered the old maxim: always write about what you know, so I did.

I have always loved animals and I’d been a vegetarian and animal rights campaigner for over twenty five years until I started to carry out the research that was needed for my novel, then I quickly became a vegan. The other interests and subjects that I know something about are: the current state of the world, philosophy, psychology, environmentalism and all forms of domination. I’m therefore fortunate enough to say that I was able to write a novel based not only on what I know, but also one that contains as much factual information as possible.

I now live in an area of the UK known as South Wales with my wife Sandra, who helped me a great deal with the novel, and our three legged rescue dog called Hector. My time is now spent promoting “The Empathy Spectrum” worldwide, working as a proofreader for other writers and thinking about my next novel.
